The Depressed Millennial Part 2

High-Functioning Depression in Millennials

High-functioning depression is a term used to describe individuals who are able to maintain a seemingly normal disposition or a successful lifestyle despite experiencing ongoing symptoms of depression. A scenarios such as this can make it difficult for others to recognize or understand their struggles.

Millennials, in particular, may be more likely to experience high-functioning depression due to societal pressures to succeed and the constant need to be productive. They may feel the need to hide their symptoms in order to meet expectations and avoid judgment.

Common Characteristics of High-Functioning Depression in Millennials:

  • Overachieving: A strong desire to succeed and meet high standards.
  • Perfectionism: An unrealistic expectation of perfection in all areas of life.
  • People-Pleasing: A tendency to prioritize the needs and happiness of others over their own.
  • Masking Emotions: Hiding their true feelings in order to appear happy and positive.
  • Physical Exhaustion: Despite appearing to be high-functioning, they may experience physical exhaustion and fatigue.
  • Difficulty Relaxing: Struggling to unwind and enjoy leisure activities.
  • Isolation: Feeling disconnected from others and avoiding social interactions.

If you or someone you know is experiencing high-functioning depression, it's important to seek help. While it may be difficult to recognize the signs, seeking professional support can make a significant difference. Remember, there is no shame in seeking help, and there is hope for recovery.

On a more personal note as someone living with high functioning depression it can be extremely hard to deal with moments of unhappiness. It often feels as though I'm letting those around me who depend on me down. I feel extremely guilty wasting time being sad when others probably have it worse than I do. It brings to light the question "what are you crying about, with a roof over your head what right do you have to feel sad?" and many others like it. It is a daunting experience that if left untreated will only get worse.
